Alastair Smith-Agbaje

Chief Executive, Lambeth and Southwark Mind

1. What do you see as the biggest blocker when tackling vulnerability in the UK?

A: The culture of competitiveness and efficiency at all costs can get in the way and lead people to override their vulnerability and push themselves beyond the reasonable because they are worried about losing their job or disappointing their boss

2. What one piece of advice would you give to a company that is trying to improve their support for vulnerable customers?

A: Think human beings not numbers, quality not quantity

3. What is the most common type of vulnerability you are seeing in your industry?

A: When working in mental health, all we encounter is vulnerability so it’s a hard one to answer. Perhaps you can generally answer that overwork and burn-out is one aspect for staff in the field. The work is very demanding and involves exposure to distressing situations, which can create vulnerability in those who tackle him.
